Caught in the Middle

I’ve photographed this location a number of times with the hope of capturing dramatic cloud formations. I was chasing something similar to the atmosphere in New Horizon. The clouds the evening before had been spectacular, and I arrived expecting a repeat of that moment.

But when I reached the site, the sky felt quiet and restrained. At first, it seemed disappointing. Still, I set up the camera and waited.

Then something unexpected happened. Estrella Mountain began catching the last light of the evening while the warehouses in the foreground slowly fell into shadow. Instead of the clouds becoming the subject, the mountain emerged from the center of the frame with a clarity I hadn’t seen there before.

I waited until the buildings lost the remaining sunlight, allowing the mountain to separate itself from the industrial band surrounding it. In that moment I realized this image was never really about dramatic weather at all. The composition had always been about the mountain itself, suspended between expansion and disappearance, caught in the middle.
