Standing Still

Before sunrise I set out to photograph a bridge from the median strip in the center of Cotton Lane. I was chasing a clean, vanishing point composition with a symmetrical line leading the viewer toward Estrella Mountain.

It didn’t work.

So I moved to the side of the bridge. The bridge no longer leads to the mountain, it pressed against it. It’s not symmetrical as I intended but it’s much more honest. The bridge works as a structure crossing the land, not guiding you into it.

20th image in the series Finding Estrella,

where the mountain is still present,

but never untouched.
